Cats may spend much of the day sleeping, but their bodies are remarkably specialized. From vibration-producing purrs to built-in low-light vision, your feline companion has adaptations that support navigation, grooming, communication, and survival.
Your cat’s “superpowers” are real biological advantages: but they do not replace preventive veterinary care or a cat health test when screening is appropriate.
Here are six fascinating feline abilities, what science tells us about them, and how they connect to a proactive pet wellness plan.
1. Can your cat’s purr help it cope with stress?
A purr is more than a sign of contentment. Cats may purr when they are:
- Relaxed and comfortable
- Seeking attention
- Nervous or frightened
- Experiencing pain
- At a veterinary visit
- Recovering from illness or injury
Domestic cat purrs generally fall within a low-frequency range of approximately 25 to 150 hertz (Hz). Hertz measures the number of sound vibrations occurring each second.
Researchers have noticed that some purr frequencies overlap with frequencies studied in mechanical vibration therapies for bone and tissue health. This has led to an intriguing theory: purring may help cats conserve bone strength or support recovery while they rest.
However, the distinction between an interesting hypothesis and proven treatment matters. There are no direct clinical studies showing that a cat’s natural purr heals fractures or treats disease. The evidence supports the frequency overlap, but not a confirmed “healing purr” effect.

- Squinting

4. Why can cats hear sounds humans cannot?
